Maree has over 60 years teaching experience commencing in 1954 after completing all the Royal Academy of Dance examinations as a dancer, including solo seal.

The Auckland school was established in 1992. Prior to that schools were in Palmerston North, Wanganui and Hastings.

He has worked with legendary choreographers such as F. Ashton, K. Macmillan, P. Wright,

J. Robbins, L. Massine, G. Tetley, H. Van Manen, R. Petit, Valois, and D. Bintley.



Carl trained with Sissie Smith, Rosella Hightower (France) and Royal Ballet School.

He joined the Royal Ballet Company, with Sir Frederick Ashton choreographing Lament of The Waves for Carl. He then became a Senior Principle with Sadler’s Well Royal Ballet dancing the leading roles in Swan Lake, Giselle, Sleeping Beauty, Coppélia, La Fille mal Gardée, The Two Pigeons, Romeo and Juliet, Raymonda Act III, Pineapple Poll, Grosse Fugue, Tilt, Dances at a Gathering, 5 Tango’s, Les Rendezvous, Daphnis and Chloe.

Carl retired from dancing to become a ballet teacher, taking over from Louise Brown to be the Director of Yorkshire Ballet Scholars and Seminars. Guest teaching Laine Theatre Arts London and other various schools and seminars in England, Sydney Australia and International RAD Seminars in Singapore, Jakarta and Wellington.

He came to New Zealand 1998, taught at New Zealand School of Dance, Alison Pond, and Paula Hunt, becoming the Artistic Director of ‘International Ballet Academy’ Christchurch. Guest teaching for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Adjudicator for New Zealand competitions.

Now teaching for Maree Montford ARAD (Solo Seal) RAD RTS (M.M.S.B.)

Carl still guest teaches throughout New Zealand.

CARL teaches the senior students and is highly respected by all his students for his vast experience, his dedication to his teaching and his wicked sense of humour!

In recent years Sherilyn has been the Principal teacher at AIS - 

a full-time training school in Japan.



Born in Auckland New Zealand Sherilyn Kennedy studied at the National Ballet School before being awarded the Royal Academy of Dance Scholarship. She studied at the Royal Ballet School for a year and was offered a contract with The Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet (now Birmingham Royal Ballet).

She was a member of the company for 21 years and 15 of those as a Principal Dancer. 

Since retiring from professional dancing Sherilyn has worked as repetiteur with the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Western Australian Ballet Company. She has worked as teacher and coach with both The New Zealand School of Dance and WAAPA - (Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in Perth).
